Career Reflections

Embarking on a legal career undoubtedly requires commitment, resilience and years of hard work. But once you’re on the career ladder, the question many lawyers quietly ask is this: do I keep climbing, do I feel stuck, or do I want something different altogether?

Career changes often happen when we least expect them — whether through unforeseen redundancy, returning to work during a challenging economic climate, or a gradual realisation that the role no longer aligns with our values or lifestyle. While change can feel unsettling, keeping your options open and taking ownership of your career direction can make that transition far less daunting.

A career pivot is rarely the result of a single decision. More often, it involves soul‑searching, exploration, and a degree of trial and error. Sometimes it’s driven by external circumstances; other times, by an internal pull towards work that feels more aligned, meaningful or sustainable.

Having personally moved from law into recruitment and then into business, each transition has broadened my perspective. It has sharpened my commercial awareness and given me a deeper understanding of how organisations truly operate — beyond the legal function alone. Far from being a step sideways, each change has added another dimension to my professional identity.

I created Considered to give legal professionals the space to explore alternative perspectives, challenge traditional definitions of progression, and make more intentional career decisions — before circumstance makes the decision for them.
